JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) was in Jackson Friday morning to speak to members of the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership.

Wicker provided constituents with an update on what was going on in Washington, D.C. He spent most of his time talking about the wars in Israel and Ukraine.

The senator reiterated his support for future military aid for Ukraine in their war against Russia. In April, Congress approved $95 billion in aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Roughly $61 billion of that is directed to Ukraine.

As global attention has shifted towards Israel and their war against Hamas, support for Ukraine has slipped, primarily among congressional Republicans. Wicker said supporting Ukraine is still in the United States' best interest.

“Supporting Ukraine in their fight for freedom also has a very practical effect of making us stronger and Russia weaker. And that ought to be something that we're looking for. The Ukrainians aren't asking us to send troops. They're just saying help us out like the rest of Europe is doing, and Europe is stepping up and Germany stepping up there. They're realizing even more that that their freedom and safety and security and future is at stake," said Wicker.

The senator also pledged his continued support for Israel. He criticized President Joe Biden's recent decision to suspend sending military aid to Israel.

The U.S. House passed a measure that would force the Biden Administration to send weapons to Israel, but it will not be considered in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
